Joe Butler is a retired Professor of Law who serves as a Flex Teacher at The Lang School. He works across disciplines to foster intellectual curiosity, critical thinking, and creative expression. Dedicated to supporting twice-exceptional learners, Joe designs engaging, inquiry-driven learning experiences, ranging from Civics and Constitutional Law in the Upper School to Space/Time and Quantum Mechanics in the Lower School.

Before joining The Lang School, Joe spent years in higher education as a law professor, specializing in civil rights and, later, veterans advocacy. A graduate of The Second City Conservatory in Chicago, he frequently integrates improvisation and humor into his teaching, helping students collaborate, take creative risks, and communicate big ideas effectively.

Joe has served on the boards of several organizations, most notably Trout Unlimited’s Veteran Service Partnership and Student Veterans of America.

Outside the classroom, Joe is an avid singer-songwriter, skilled dog trainer, and snorkeling and scuba diving enthusiast. When he isn’t playing guitar or pondering the mysteries of the cosmos, he enjoys spending time with his three 2e children, revisiting favorite local spots, and fly fishing.
