< Back Maggie Uschakow Art Teacher SAINT JOHN'S UNIVERSITY - BFA IN GRAPHIC DESIGN ADELPHI UNIVERSITY - MA IN ART EDUCATION PURDUE UNIVERSITY GLOBAL - POST-GRADUATE CERTIFICATE IN BEHAVIOR ANALYSIS My name is Maggie, and I was born and raised in Westchester, NY. After being a New Yorker for my entire life, I've recently moved to Jersey City where I spend my afternoons bringing my dog for long walks in the park. I began my educational career as an Assistant Teacher. While completing my Master's Degree in Art Education, I transitioned to becoming a General Education Lead Teacher in an Early Childhood classroom. Eventually, I took on the role of in-house Atelierista (Art Teacher) for several years. With aspirations to shift into the field of Art Therapy, I pursued a Post-Graduate Certificate in Behavior Analysis. I believe every student is unique and full of potential. I strive to cultivate a supportive and inspiring environment where students feel empowered to take creative risks and celebrate their individuality, fostering not only artistic skills but also confidence and a strong sense of self. Outside of work, my passions include my rescue pup, Gator, and directing Shire Village Camp, a sleepaway camp in Western Massachusetts. I've been part of the camp community since I was a camper myself back in 2001. maggie.uschakow@thelangschool.org

< Back Erin Schrobilgen Lower School Teacher LAWRENCE UNIVERSITY - BA PROGRESSIVE EDUCATION INSTITUTE - MS Hello everyone! I am so excited to continue teaching in the Bryant Park classroom this school year, and I'm delighted to be starting my third year here at Lang! I’ve been working with children for about seven years, but my path toward teaching truly began when my brother was diagnosed with ADHD. Seeing how few 2e spaces existed for students like him inspired me to create safe, inclusive environments where every student can thrive. My primary goal as an educator—and in life—is to make learning as engaging, fun, and accessible as possible. In my free time, I enjoy crocheting, spending quality time with family, and playing video games. I’m looking forward to another fantastic school year with the Lang community! erin.schrobilgen@the langschool.org

Every day in this role is unique, as it is filled with new opportunities to engage with Lang students, staff and families. My background as a school psychologist allows me to connect and support our dynamic lower school students, helping them feel genuinely understood and equipped to overcome life's challenges. Working with 2E students is particularly rewarding for me, as I love finding creative ways to help them thrive in their learning, build self-confidence, and develop meaningful relationships with others. Before transitioning to K-12 education, I supported international students preparing to study in the U.S., a role that involved extensive global travel and inspired my shift to working directly with students in the K-12 school setting. Outside of Lang, I enjoy traveling, skiing, gardening, & taking my dog Reny for walks around Brooklyn. Most of all, I love spending time with my family in Hawaii & Maine. caroline.blasco@thelangschool.org

< Back Colin Cannon Upper School Science & Math Teacher GEORGE MASON UNIVERSITY - BS IN ECONOMICS GEORGE MASON UNIVERSITY - MA IN ECONOMICS I’m a STEM educator with five years of experience teaching in schools for accelerated learners. Before entering education, I worked on political campaigns in both Colorado and Washington, D.C. As a teacher, I use scientific principles and mathematical modeling to help students understand not only natural phenomena, but human behavior and decision making. STEM material is vital for teaching how to observe, quantify and investigate the world around us. My practice is focused on active discovery and building concepts from first principles. I’m thrilled to join a school like Lang that focuses on the strengths of each individual learner. Outside of work, I can be found running, cycling, traveling, exploring New York City, and playing card games and board games (favorites include MTG, Dominion and Flamme Rouge). I seek tasks that challenge me physically, intellectually and culturally. I’m excited to be at Lang and learn about the diverse perspectives of the students and families. colin.cannon@thelangschool.org

- Our Team
At Lang, we boost gifted students' success with accelerated learning. Our skilled staff receives ongoing development to ensure both students and teachers excel. ABOUT US HEAD OF SCHOOL'S MESSAGE OUR MISSION DIVERSITY, EQUITY & BELONGING BLOG: LANGLEARNS OUR BOARD STRATEGIC PLAN OUR TEAM CREATE Our Team Research demonstrates that providing gifted children with in-school opportunities for accelerated learning and talent development with ability peers improves long-term academic achievement, creative accomplishment, and commitment to learning — and not doing so contributes to chronic underachievement, low self-esteem, and a lack of motivation and direction, especially among gifted students with learning disabilities (i.e., 2e students). At the heart of everything we do at Lang is talent development, which surfaces and stokes passions, provides structure and viability for big ideas, instills a sense of purpose and commitment, and, ultimately, develops gifts and grit. Professional development (PD) — talent development for staff — is as vital to Lang's model as talent development for students. Our staff is invited to refine and reflect on their own skills and passions via ongoing in-house coaching and year-round PD both on campus and off. A school can only sustain a robust student talent development program with a growth mindset-oriented team of teachers continuously invited to develop their own strengths and talents. At The Lang School, faculty are not only educators, but designers of learning, stewards of student growth, and contributors to a collaborative professional community. Our work is relational, intentional, and grounded in deep respect for 2e learners. This is not about perfection, but about continuous growth in service of students and one another. Faculty at Lang “strive” to: Create Psychological Safety in the Classroom We create environments where students feel safe to take risks, ask questions, make mistakes, and be fully themselves. We normalize struggle as part of learning and respond to students with empathy and curiosity. Know and Advocate for Each Learner We deeply understand our students as individuals—academically, socially, and emotionally. We use that knowledge to differentiate instruction, anticipate needs, and advocate for what helps each student thrive. Design Engaging, Rigorous, and Responsive Learning Experiences We plan intentionally, balancing challenge with support. We adjust in real time based on student needs, interests, and feedback, especially for 2e learners whose profiles are complex and dynamic. Build and Maintain Trust with Students and Colleagues We are consistent, transparent, and respectful. We assume positive intent while addressing impact directly. We communicate proactively and avoid allowing misunderstandings to grow. Engage in Productive Collaboration We work as one faculty, not as isolated classrooms. We share insights, strategies, and responsibility for students. We engage in healthy dialogue and use disagreement to strengthen our practice. Hold High Expectations with Appropriate Support We believe students are capable of meaningful growth. We scaffold thoughtfully without lowering standards, helping students build both competence and confidence. Be Dependable and Proactive We follow through on commitments and communicate early when challenges arise. We anticipate student needs and coordinate with colleagues to ensure continuity and coherence. Partner with Families as Collaborators We communicate clearly, respectfully, and regularly with families. We seek to align around shared goals and approach differences with openness and professionalism. Commit to Reflection and Professional Growth We seek feedback, reflect on our practice, and make adjustments. We stay curious and committed to improving our craft in service of students. Embrace a “Whatever It Takes” Mindset for Students We recognize that supporting 2e learners requires flexibility, creativity, and persistence. We step in when needed and ask, “How can I help this student succeed?” With highly credentialed faculty trained in gifted and special education who are content area masters and who understand our students' acceleration and support needs, students thrive at Lang. We take great pride in our staff's commitment to helping our students achieve their full potential, and we demonstrate that pride by investing heavily in our staff's achievement of their own full potential. - American History I | The Lang School
American History I Eighth Grade Middle School Grade(s) Division In American History I, students will think critically about the following question: "How should we tell America's story?". This course covers American history from the pre-colonial era through the Civil War and Reconstruction. Students will think critically about the formative events in American history and how they have historically shaped the perception of our country. Students will engage with history through analyzing primary sources to understand how identity and bias can influence our storytelling. Time will also be spent discussing current events, with connections being made to content discussed in class. < Back
- Calculus I | The Lang School
Calculus I Eleventh Grade, Twelfth Grade Upper School Grade(s) Division Calculus covers all content required for the AP® Calculus Test - both AB and BC. The course starts with five major problems that introduce the following big ideas of calculus: optimization, limits, differential equations, exponential functions, the relationship between distance and velocity, piecewise functions, volumes of revolution, volumes by slicing, and the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus. Each of these five major problems is revisited again later in the course for students to solve using new calculus knowledge. Each chapter reviews the concepts developed previously and builds on them. The curriculum contains several key labs and hands-on activities throughout the course to introduce concepts, such as when students recognize that the rate of a walker relates to the slope of a graph in the "Slope Walk." Labs also develop conceptual understanding, such as when the students discover instantaneous velocity in the "Ramp Lab." Students learn about derivatives and integrals simultaneously during the first four chapters and both are presented geometrically and in context. The first four chapters cover: Pre-calculus topics, such as trigonometric functions, domain and range, and composite functions Limits and continuity Applications of rates of change, such as velocity and acceleration The difference between average velocity and instantaneous velocity The definition of a derivative and the Power Rule Slope Functions - functions that find the slope of another function for all values in the domain Differentiability and non-differentiability Increasing and decreasing functions and concavity Estimating the area under a curve with a Riemann Sum Area functions - functions that find the area under a curve from 0 to all values in the domain The fifth chapter connects derivatives and integrals together with the Fundamental Theorem. Chapters six through nine cover: How to find the distance, velocity and acceleration of an object when given information about its position, velocity or acceleration Optimization o Related Rates o Derivative tools such as the Product, Quotient and Chain Rules, as well as implicit differentiation and finding derivatives of all trigonometric and inverse trigonometric functions The derivative and integral of the natural logarithm and y = ex The Mean Value Theorem o Integration using Substitution Differential Equations and Slope Fields Volumes of Revolutions and volumes of known cross-section < Back
