The Lang School’s Unique Approach to Student Support

ree

At The Lang School, we know that every twice-exceptional (2e) learner brings a distinctive mix of strengths and challenges. No two profiles are the same—which means no single support model can work for every student. That’s why Lang’s approach to student support is intentionally flexible, collaborative, and deeply personalized.

Our goal is not to “fix” challenges, but to design a network of supports that honor each student’s identity, amplify their strengths, and build strategies, skills, and independence over time.

A Thoughtful Beginning

Support at Lang starts even before a student’s first day. During the admissions process, our team works closely with families—and often with outside providers or previous schools—to understand what services have worked in the past and what new supports might be needed. When appropriate, our therapists conduct additional assessments to get a clear picture of a child’s needs. Within the first few weeks of school, families receive an initial plan for services. This plan is not static; it evolves through ongoing observation, assessment, and collaboration. Because children grow and change, so do their supports.

Core Supports for Every Student

All Lang students benefit from structures that make classrooms accessible, affirming, and responsive. These include:

  • A personalized Student Profile to guide instruction and planning.

  • Interdisciplinary team meetings to set goals, monitor progress, and share strategies.

  • Flexible seating and sensory supports designed by our occupational therapists.

  • Social-emotional support woven into daily routines—from morning meeting to lunch and recess.

  • Sensory and movement break areas in every classroom.

  • Access to assistive technology as needed.

  • Use of Collaborative & Proactive Solutions (CPS) tools to problem-solve challenges with students, not for them.

These universal supports create a foundation where all learners can engage meaningfully.

Layered Support Through MTSS

Lang’s services are built around a Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS) designed specifically for 2e learners:

  • Tier 1: Universal Supports – Strategies built into every classroom, including push-in services from therapists, flexible routines, and consistent expectations across the day.

  • Tier 2: Targeted Supports – Small group or pull-out services, such as executive functioning workshops, social-emotional learning groups, or specialized literacy instruction.

  • Tier 3: Intensive Supports – Highly individualized interventions, like 1:1 therapy, behavior plans, or intensive remediation, designed in close partnership with families and outside providers.

This layered system allows students to get the right level of support at the right time—while maintaining the flexibility to adjust as needs shift.

Developmentally Aligned Services

Lang’s approach also grows with the child:

  • Lower School (K–5): Speech and counseling groups, OT sessions in the sensory gym, handwriting and keyboarding support, and Foundations classes for social-emotional learning.

  • Middle & Upper School (6–12): WIN (“What I Need”) blocks for personalized support, Functions classes for executive functioning, college counseling, and therapy services as needed.

At every level, supports are embedded into the fabric of school life so students practice skills in authentic, everyday contexts.

A Dynamic, Collaborative Process

Perhaps what makes Lang’s model most unique is its collaborative and evolving nature. The Therapy Team, divisional directors, families, and outside providers work together to adjust supports as students grow. Families are encouraged to update neuropsychological evaluations every three years so plans remain fresh and responsive.

Above all, Lang’s approach reflects a core belief: support is not about dependence—it’s about building confidence, resilience, and independence over time.

Looking Ahead

For twice-exceptional learners, the right supports make all the difference. At The Lang School, we ensure that every student has access to a dynamic, personalized network of services that grows with them—so they can not only succeed in the classroom but also flourish in the wider world.
