< Back Ahmed Mohammad Upper School Physics Teacher CAIRO UNIVERSITY - BA IN ASTROPHYSICS CAIRO UNIVERSITY - MS IN QUANTUM PHYSICS GEORGIA TECH UNIVERSITY - MS FOCUSING ON MACHINE LEARNING (IN PROCESS) I am thrilled to serve The Lang School's vibrant learning community as a Physics and Astronomy Teacher; I am inspired each day by its students, families, and colleagues alike. Before coming to The Lang School, I have taught over the past 16 years physics and astronomy in three different countries (Egypt, Qatar, and the United States). In the Physics and Astronomy department at Cairo University, I taught for over eight years. During this time, I taught undergraduate physics, mathematics, and astronomy courses, In addition, I spent one-year teaching physics at a STEM American school in Cairo. Also, I have worked as an instructor of physics for the Mathematics, Statistics, and Physics department at Qatar University in Doha, Qatar for one year. In my teaching experience in the United States, I taught physics at Rising Star Academy High School in New Jersey for four years, as well as serving as an adjunct professor of physics and astronomy at Union County College for two years. In addition to teaching at the Lang School, I also teach astronomy and physics at Manhattan College. I believe that teaching kids science (particularly physics and astronomy) in an inquiry-based manner will motivate them to become interested in these important fields. Cultivating this deep student interest is my goal at The Lang school. ahmed.mohammad@thelangschool.org

  • Jared Gniewek

< Back Jared Gniewek In-house substitute / floater teacher MONROE COMMUNITY COLLEGE - AA SUNY BROCKPORT - BS I have had a varied and wondrous hodge-podge of gigs and jobs over the years and am so stoked to have be at The Lang School as an In-House Substitute and Floater. I'll be bringing a creative lifestyle to model for students that reflects time I've invested in cartooning, comics scripting, video game development, and audio play production. I began with the school in Spring of 2022 as the Dungeon Master for the after-school Dungeons and Dragons program and was asked to do occasional substituting shortly thereafter because of the good rapport I had developed with the students. I believe passion is the linchpin of an interdisciplinary approach. In my role, I enjoy mentoring and coaching students to help them discover how mastery of a subject truly evokes a ripple effect of knowledge and how confidence can extend beyond one's natural gifts. My home life is a maximalist whirlwind of drawing, reading, painting miniatures, prepping Dungeons and Dragons adventures, cooking, and (most importantly) co-parenting my son along with my kitsch-wife supreme. jared.gniewek@thelangschool.org

  • Our Team

ABOUT US MESSAGE FROM MARK OUR BLOG: LANGLEARNS BOARD OF TRUSTEES OUR TEAM MISSION & PRACTICES EQUITY @ LANG Our Team Research demonstrates that providing gifted children with in-school opportunities for accelerated learning and talent development with ability peers improves long-term academic achievement, creative accomplishment, and commitment to learning — and not doing so contributes to chronic underachievement, low self-esteem, and a lack of motivation and direction, especially among gifted students with learning challenges (i.e., 2e students). At the heart of everything we do at Lang is talent development, which surfaces and stokes passions, provides structure and viability for big ideas, instills a sense of purpose and commitment, and, ultimately, develops gifts and grit. Professional development (PD) — talent development for staff — is as vital to Lang's model as talent development for students. Our staff is invited to refine and reflect on their own skills and passions via ongoing in-house coaching and year-round PD both on campus and off. A school can only sustain a robust student talent development program with a growth mindset-oriented team of teachers continuously invited to develop their own strengths and talents. With highly credentialed faculty trained in gifted and special education who are content area masters and who understand our students' acceleration and support needs, students thrive at Lang. We take great pride in our staff's commitment to helping our students achieve their full potential, and we demonstrate that pride by investing heavily in our staff's achievement of their own full potential. • Sophie Rose Anger

< Back Sophie Rose Anger Librarian & Creative Writing Teacher GOUCHER COLLEGE -BA QUEENS COLLEGE CUNY - MS IN MLIS (IN PROCESS) I am really excited to serve as Lang's as School Librarian and Creative Writing Teacher. After studying Education and English in undergrad, directing a creative literature after-school program, and teaching 6th grade ELA for three years, I decided that what I ultimately want to be is a school librarian. I love curating engaging libraries, fostering a love of reading among the youth, assisting with research skills, and supporting teachers and students with all sorts of learning resources. I am currently studying library science in grad school, focusing on a “School Media Specialist” track, so I feel very lucky to be able to presently apply what I’m learning to my work at Lang. I do love to read and journal myself, but I can also be found making music, biking to any and every destination, and simply hanging out with friends and family in Brooklyn. sophie.anger@thelangschool.org

  • Katy Johnson

< Back Katy Johnson Lower School Spring Creek (K-1st) Co-Teacher UNIVERSITY OF COLORADO AT BOULDER - BA PSYCHOLOGY & SOCIOLOGY BANK STREET COLLEGE OF EDUCATION - MA GENERAL & SPECIAL EDUCATION I am extremely excited to be part of the Lang School community. I co-teach alongside Jesse in the Spring Creek K-1 class! This is my 9th year teaching in New York. Prior to coming to Lang, I taught in Charter Schools across the city, grades K through 3rd grade. I love being in the classroom and collaborating with our team and community to create a lively school environment full of fun and learning. I believe school should be a safe place to take risks, make mistakes, build relationships and learn from one another. I am originally from California and have lived in New York for 11 years. I love discovering new restaurants, trying out recipes in the kitchen, being in nature, diving into a new book and going to the beach. I cannot wait to join the team and learn and grow with all of you. katy.johnson@thelangschool.org

  • Susan Habicht

< Back Susan Habicht Middle School Math Teacher & Middle School Inwood Co-Advisor LOYOLA UNIVERSITY MARYLAND - BA IN SOCIOLOGY NEW YORK UNIVERSITY - MA IN MATH EDUCATION While having taught 12-18 year-olds since 1998, I grew the most after becoming a mom in 2009 and then becoming a Lang teacher in 2020. Both of these life changes have helped me become more empathic, accepting, flexible, professional, and positive. My math students help me to be a better mother and my children help me to be a better teacher. I started my teaching career at The NYC Museum School (decades ago), then spent 11 years at Sleepy Hollow Middle School. My switch to private school was in 2015 when I joined Stuart Country Day School in Princeton, NJ. I joined The Lang School during the pandemic due to my need to work remotely for family reasons. This is when I truly blossomed into the teacher I have always wanted to be. At Lang, I am able to focus fully on a math mindset with individual students. I integrate The 8 Standards for Mathematical Practice into all my lessons, and I consistently lead students to access their own prior knowledge and strategies to develop problem solving skills. It is my intention to continue to grow, learn, and improve as an educator and as a human. In turn I regularly model self-talk, self-regulation, mistake-making, and recovering from mistakes. I love reading novels, completing the NY Times crossword, and I wish I had time to knit and watch TV! Bottom line: I absolutely LOVE it at Lang and I look forward to coming to work every day! susan.habicht@thelangschool.org

< Back Matthew Gross Upper School Math Teacher & Governor Advisor UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND, COLLEGE PARK - BA IN MATHEMATICS TEACHERS COLLEGE - MA IN MATH EDUCATION I have taught math in New York City schools since 2010 and Lang has been my home since 2014. I believe that mathematical knowledge is built through active problem-solving rather than passive transfer between teachers and students. I feel lucky to work in a dynamic environment, supported by staff and administration that believe the same things that I do. Outside of teaching, I enjoy riding bicycles, solving crossword puzzles, cooking, and exploring New York City. matthew.gross@thelangschool.org

< Back Tucker Anglemyer Executive Functioning Coach / Upper School Student Support NEW ENGLAND COLEGE - BA, PSYCHOLOGY I am beyond excited to join the Lang community as the Executive Functioning Coach! I was born and raised in Kunkletown, PA, then spent four years in New Hampshire, and am now venturing out to NYC. Before joining Lang, I gained a little over a year of experience working in therapeutic and special education settings in both New Hampshire and Pennsylvania. During my time at New England College, in collaboration with five peers, I created a student success program aimed at enhancing students’ organization, time management, task initiation, and decision making skills. I learned quickly that this was an important skill I enjoyed sharing with others. In and out of the classroom, I've always been dedicated to building positive relationships and inspiring others. When I am not in the classroom, I’m probably out in nature reading, rock climbing, or playing card games with friends. As I begin my journey at Lang (along with many students’ and their families!), what I look forward to most is seeing our twice-exceptional learners doing the right thing, learning to become self-advocates, and finding joy in their educational experiences. tucker.anglemyer@thelangschool.org

< Back Lauren Carey Director of Teaching & Learning / Middle School Student Support KUTZTOWN UNIVERSITY OF PENNSYLVANIA - B.S. ED. EAST STROUDSBURG UNIVERSITY OF PENNSYLVANIA - M.ED. & READING SPECIALIST CERTIFICATION It is an honor to work with the incredible faculty and staff at The Lang School as the Director for Staff Development. My educational career began in 2008 as an ELA, Social Studies, and Reading Intervention teacher in Pennsylvania. After 8 years in public school, I decided to move to NYC where I became a founding middle school teacher at The Neighborhood Charter School of Harlem. In 2018, I graciously accepted a position in curricular leadership where I designed ELA curriculum tailored to each cohort of students, and provided instructional coaching and professional development for our staff. A passion for serving a wonderfully complex population of twice-exceptional students led me to The Lang School in the spring of 2022. I am truly grateful for the opportunity to work collaboratively with my colleagues in order to provide an optimal learning environment for all students. My favorite extracurricular activities include spending time with my family, exploring the city with friends, and enjoying Central Park with my dog, Peter! lauren.carey@thelangschool.org

< Back David Siever Fine Arts Teacher SUNY PURCHASE - BA MARYLAND INSTITUTE COLLEGE OF ART - POST-BAC DEGREE IN ART BRANDEIS UNIVERSITY - POST-BAC DEGREE IN ART THE SCHOOL OF THE ART INSTITUTE OF CHICAGO - MA IN FINE ARTS BROOKLYN COLLEGE - POST-GRADUATE EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION I am excited to serve as the Fine Arts teacher here at Lang. I am a Brooklyn-based artist with a Master of Fine Arts in Ceramic Sculpture from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. I have lectured on art and history both nationally and internationally. A recent personal highlight was serving as the Visiting Artist at the Australian National University where I taught and worked on a series of sculptures about the Australian and Aboriginal experience in the First World War utilizing archives at the Australian War Memorial. I do narrative ceramics; combining my interests in history and art to make sculptures inspired by historical events and even more so by the people that history has forgotten. These "footnotes" of history focus on the forgotten protagonists and the disasters which reveal the costs of human desires, ambition, and folly. By creating sculptures, I hope to bring these lost figures to life, to have them step out of the photographs, diaries and letters that form the only record of their existence and to let them reemerge in three dimensions. My work is in the permanent collection of the Kinsey Institute and many other private collections. david.siever@thelangschool.org
